You can expect all 4 seasons, but the winter’s here are cloudy and grey. We don’t really get much snow either. Instead, we mostly get 35 degree days with a lot of ice. The summers are also very hot, particularly in August. In the summer, you can expect 90+ degree days.

Being home to many companies in many different industries and The Ohio State University makes for a very diverse jobs market. Sometimes people move here and have trouble finding a job, or they lose one. Fortunately, the job market is often forgiving here, with many companies and many sectors looking for great talent.

Things to Know About Moving to  Columbus Ohio 3: You Have to Know What a Buckeye Is

A buckeye is several things in Columbus, Ohio. A buckeye is:

  1. The state tree of Ohio. Its seeds are called buckeyes.
  2. The mascot of The Ohio State University. OSU sports teams are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes.
  3. A delicious candy. A buckeye candy is a chocolate and peanut butter candy. With chocolate on the outside and peanut butter on the inside, it looks like a buckeye seed and tastes like a Reese’s cup. I highly recommend you give one a try!
  4. A graduate or fan of The Ohio State University. Graduates and fans of OSU and OSU football often call themselves Buckeyes.

Things to Know About Moving to Columbus Ohio 4: Columbus is a Football City

Columbus, Ohio residents are often very passionate about OSU football. During football game days, traffic downtown and near downtown Columbus gets very bad, so I recommend avoiding the area during those days. Otherwise, you will be in traffic for a long time! During home games, there are nearly 100k people in and around the stadium. With Columbus having a population of around 1 million people, this means nearly 10% of the city is downtown during home games!

Things to Know About Moving to  Columbus Ohio 5: Columbus Has Several Pro Sports Teams

We have a few professional sports teams here in Columbus, Ohio.

  • The NHL’s Columbus Jackets. They play downtown in the Arena District of Columbus.
  • The minor league baseball team, the  Columbus Clippers. They’re the AAA team of the Cleveland Indians. Their stadium is also in the Arena District.
  • The MLS Cup winning Columbus Crew. Columbus nearly lost the Crew, as the owner wanted to move the team to Austin. However, the people of Columbus rallied and managed to help keep the Crew here.

Things to Know About Moving to Columbus Ohio 6: Columbus is Very Flat

You won’t find large mountains here in Columbus, as most of the terrain here is flat. If you like skiing or snowboarding, there are a few slopes within about 30-50 minutes of here where you can enjoy the snow. However, you’ll likely have to drive a bit farther out if you’d like to go snowboarding or skiing on large, challenging terrain like mountains.

What you will find in abundance here, however, are golf courses! We often joke that you can barely throw a rock here without hitting a golf course. If you’re interested in golf, you will have a near infinite amount of options for both playing and learning the sport here in Columbus.
